Night shift warehouse worker and shelf stocker quits mid-shift after boss tries to write up their team for taking a break: 'The company felt we didn’t deserve a 15 minute break after unloading 1500 boxes by hand'

Stocking groceries and large retail stores overnight is an absolutely thankless job. Brutal hours moving high volumes of product with the brute force of lifting heavy boxes to the precise detail of facing items on the shelf—all while the rest of the world sleeps and time seemingly stands still in the liminal space of high ceilings and bright fluorescent lighting. 

These types of jobs normally have carefully monitored breaks. With minimal downtime for all the work and movement, you're doing. The one trade-off compared to the day shift is that there are no customers around to disturb you and consequently you have very little interaction with anyone at all—perfect for the closed-off introverts among us who prefer to get on with things without being disturbed. Of course, being night shift there's always a colorful cast of characters on your team and your boss will either be the coolest manager you've ever had or a complete piece of work. 

In these dreary working conditions, getting grief on top of all of this for a mistake that you didn't even make is enough to send you off the deep end. Still, there's nothing like watching the sun rise as you're getting off shift, knowing that you're walking out of there for the last time.

    "First time quitting a job mid shift"

    I needed some extra cash so I picked up an overnight job at a retail store unloading the freight and packing shelves for the customers to shop in the morning. The store is purposely understaffed and pushed to the absolute limit with shipments and demands to still meet quotas, it's a crew of 3 people including me unloading the truck of over 2000 boxes by hand sorting them then packing them out.

    Ok_Cow_3267 Years ago I was an overnight stocker for over three years. I had started a job doing that a couple of years ago and lasted two days. Boss was a total j and I walked out of work too. They moved me to days when I told them why I left and someone else apologized for the other guy; and I quit again when I found myself soon scheduled overlapping hours with the same bu y.
